THE CARBON FINGERPRINT

THE PRODUCTION AND USE OF VIRGIN AND RECYCLED STEEL RESULT IN UNAVOIDABLE EMISSIONS OF CARBON DIOXIDE. LESS STEEL MEANS A SMALLER CARBON FOOTPRINT. HOWEVER, REALITY ISN’T THAT SIMPLE. IT’S NOT ABOUT CHOOSING SUSTAINABILITY OVER SAFETY; IT’S ABOUT CHOOSING WHAT’S PERFECT FOR YOU. WE’VE DONE THE MATH IN OUR CO2 EMISSIONS CALCULATIONS.

Like most things in life, steel is a coin with two sides. Steel has many benefits and is present in many aspects of people’s lives. Due to its many positive properties and characteristics, steel is probably the industry’s most important material. Our society, including the global economy, is dependent on steel for construction, transportation, infrastructure, healthcare, warehousing, manufacturing, and many other things. If you flip the coin, there are unavoidable emissions of carbon dioxide. There’s no denying it. Most of the carbon dioxide emissions come from purchased steel. That’s why we need to do the best we can, with what we have. Most importantly, we must be transparent about it.

CALCULATED PROTECTION

As the global leader in steel mesh panel solutions, it’s our responsibility to keep you safe and reduce your carbon footprint. We’re constantly trying to increase the amount of recycled steel in our products, but we’re also helping our customers to make more thoughtful decisions, both for themselves and the environment. Above all, we make it easier to compare products from a broader perspective. In our CO2 emissions calculations, we take both safety and sustainability into consideration.

THIS IS HOW WE DID IT

Troax’s CO2 emissions calculations provide approximate values for the larger article groups. For the time being, our calculations include the emissions of CO2- eq in tonnes connected to our operations in Sweden during 2021. In short, the calculations are based on the reported amount of CO2-eq emissions, divided by the total weight of the number of products sold. Every product has been assigned a CO2 impact value that takes the product’s weight into consideration in proportion to other products. Low weight means a lower CO2 impact and vice versa. Our calculations are based on the following emission categories:

Scope1
Scope2
Scope3

These factors have been multiplied with an emission factor that is calculated based on common and approved practices. In our calculations, we didn’t take end-of-life recycling of steel into consideration. Troax has no control of what our customers do with their steel products at the end of the product life cycle. In addition, the recycling process differs greatly from market to market. However, it should be noted that approximately 99% of our products are made of recyclable steel. Scope 3 aspects such as transports to our factory in Sweden, capital goods, and leased assets are excluded.

The Smart Fix 60X40 system, based on 60x40 posts and ST20 panels, has a 27% smaller carbon footprint compared to the Strong Fix system with 80x80 posts and ST30 panels.
This reduction is closely linked to the weight of the systems. The Smart Fix system is perfect for projects where the carbon footprint plays the leading role.
In other cases, where extra high safety demands are placed on the enclosure, the Strong Fix system is an obvious choice

15% LESS CO2

Our mesh panel, ST20 2050x1500, has a 15% smaller carbon footprint compared to the stronger ST30 2050X1500.

CUT THE FOOTPRINT BY 54%

The stronger 80x80x2200 post is tested to withstand impacts up to 8,180 joules. A significantly lighter product, like our 60X40X2200 post can withstand 2,100 joules, but it also has a smaller carbon footprint. Due to the lower weight, the difference is 54% in terms of CO2 emissions
