Standards - How to increase Anti-Collapse Safety

When an accident happens and a person gets hurt or even killed due to an object falling from a pallet rack, the question of “how can we avoid this in the future” always arises. Do we have safety instructions and procedures? Are they good enough? Where they followed? Do we have any anti-collapse protection? IS THE PROTECTION STRONG ENOUGH?

Why do we implement standards in products and processes?

A stupid question you might think! It’s, of course, to make sure that you are a consistent and reliable partner to your customers. To show everybody that you know the game and will deliver what you promise regarding quality, service, and safety each and every time they work with you.

The reason for installing anti-collapse panels must be for the protection and safety of anyone inside a warehouse, whether working, a bystander, or a visitor. It shouldn’t just be the working authorities forcing you to implement a minimum level of protection. While there is no law, regulation or standard (yet) saying what the minimum power of resistance an anti-collapse system must contain,

...we believe that every warehouse using a forklift
has a substantial risk of falling pallets or objects and that everyone
within range of this should be protected.

Purchasing anti-collapse protection

So, what happens if the working authorities state that just any, regardless of quality, anti-collapse protection must be installed and the matter ends up on the purchaser’s table? 

Well, the purchaser should undertake a risk analysis of their needs and try to evaluate the different systems available from suppliers, who most likely don’t have any test result or a standard to show. Unfortunately, the purchaser does have a simpler way of choosing a product and supplier, and I think we can all guess what that might be.

Now we all can sleep tight knowing that our ACL system will withstand a heavy impact of 2500 Joules with all parts remaining in its place.
